Another sad Halloween realization

So here’s a sad realization that I can share with those of you that are over 12.

On Friday I dressed as Alice in Wonderland to give out candy to trick or treaters at the USO in Boston.  It was a very recognizable costume, or so I thought.  Who wouldn’t know the blonde haired, blue dress and white tights wearing, lost bunny carrying, maryjane shoed character from one of the most famous tales of all time by Lewis Carol??  Boys have a get out of jail free card, but I was convinced little girls would “get me.”  Boy was I wrong.  Out of about 75 kids under the age of 10, only a handful greeted me by “name” and MANY more actually asked “What are you?” !  First, I was a little offended by the What instead of Who in their question, but I’ll let it slide.

Then came in a Coastie with his daughter and HE (30+ years of age) said “Hi Snow White!” Stupid boys!  And when I corrected him, he pointed out that his daughter only watches Dora…”how was [he] supposed to know?”  Seriously!? It saddens me to think of all the great stories I was read to as a kid that are no longer shared with the newer generations.  Now, unless something is bilingual, animated and has a catchy theme song, it isn’t worth a child’s time.  Maybe I should go drown myself in the leftover Halloween candy….sugar coma will make it all better!

So I leave you, with a little advice from Alice…

Alice: Better read it first, for if one drinks much from a bottle marked “Poison”, it’s almost certain to disagree with one sooner or later.
